[caption id="attachment_2981" align="alignnone" width="1600"] My first 6 salt water flies bought in Australia[/caption] Back in February I sadly got rid of all of my flies, as well as all of my tying material, when immigrating from South Africa to Australia. It was perhaps a little drastic, but considering the volume of natural fibre in both, it seemed like the most logical and simple thing to do. After all, I didn't want to be the next victim of "Border Security." Now while this may have made the packing process easier, it was perhaps little short sighted. With a weekend planned at Toowoon Bay, I headed down to a local fly fishing shop on my lunch-break. Much to my dismay each of the flies I purchased cost around $10 (R100). Considering these…
I've now visited the Bend twice, both times in pouring rain with the river far too dirty to fish. But that's far from my biggest problem. On my latest trip, when everyone headed off for an afternoon nap, I decided to skip the river and give the still waters a try. I therefore got Dave to sketch me up a rough map of the dams on the property, grabbed my fly rods, and headed out for an afternoon session. My first stop was at Otter Dam which was too dirty to dedicate any time too. So I quickly popped over to Three Springs Dam which, although dirty, was fishable. I kitted up my rods and began prospecting the wall with minimal confidence. There was little sign of activity so after 15 minutes I called it and…
Well done to Warren for having an article and a few photos published in Wildside Magazine. [caption id="attachment_2112" align="aligncenter" width="900"] Warren's article in Wildside Magazine[/caption]
This year I was lucky enough to receive this incredible net as a birthday present from my wife. It was hand crafted by Mario Geldenhuys of Custom Fly Rods. It's fair to say that the net is a stunner, and that the quality is impeccable. Much to my wife's dismay it will never touch the water, but it's a work of art fit to hang on the wall in my man cave. Nick and Warren won the Durban Fly Tyers Foul Hook award in 2013. This meant re-tying the giant fly for the 2014 winner. Warren took on the challenge and put together a large popper with the help of his injured wife. [slideshow id=102]
Back in 2005 Nick and I made our first visit to Ponto do Oura, Mozambique. Amidst all the fishing we took to my trusty Pajero and explored the surrounding areas for both new fishing spots as well as any adventure that lay around the corner. Now you must remember that in 2005 the Pontos were completely different to what they are today. There was far less tourism, very few holiday resorts, and far fewer bars. So when we stumbled across a small reed bar in the middle of nowhere we thought we'd hit gold. And we had! Our first beer was a 2M dumpy which cost us R10. We then threw back a Laurentina dumpy which also cost R10. Realising that we were bound to have a few more we inquired about the price…
